Sorting through our thoughts and feelings about what’s happened in the past can feel like a huge task. It’s easy to get stuck in a loop, finding it tough to make sense of our emotions: writing it all down can really help!
Several years ago, I found myself repeatedly waking up at night with vivid imagery and words dancing in my mind. This creative surge coincided with a significant phase of my personal journey, where I delved deeply into therapeutic exploration, processing intense memories and emotions. Despite having never written poetry before, the metaphors woven into the poem unintentionally invite varied interpretations, allowing each reader to connect with it in their own unique way.
Poetry therapy is a cool way to express yourself, kind of like art therapy. It uses poems to help people heal and feel better. When you write narrative poetry, you want to show how one thing leads to another—something happens, and then there are consequences. Poetry is a fantastic tool in therapy, turning everyday stuff into powerful and vivid words.
Diving into poetry therapy or just freewriting is all about exploring our feelings and digging up memories that might be hiding away. It’s a journey of self-discovery that boosts our self-awareness. When we put our thoughts and feelings into words, it not only gives them a voice but also helps validate what we’ve experienced.
The most powerful poems often come straight from the heart, usually surfacing when we feel intense emotions as I did. They’re raw and act as perfect outlets for what we need to release. Plus, writing poetry can help us find clarity, making it easier to understand what’s going on in our lives.
